The early challenge for Ana Ivanovic was to avoid crashing into thewalls of an empty Belgrade swimming pool where she played tennis at five.Now, her goal is to reach the No. 1 ranking. The 20-year-old is the youngestof a Serbian trio-including Jelena Jankovic and Novak Djokovic-who areranked in the top 10 and excelled at the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S.Open.
Starting Tennis in Empty Swimming Pool
Ivanovic got her first taste of indoor tennis at the age of five at a NewBelgrade neighbourhood. At that time, after she watched the tennis ontelevision, she remembered the phone number of a local tennis schooland begged her parents to take her there. She was then given a racketfor her fifth birthday and immediately fell in love with the game.
But Serbia is a nation with very little tennis tradition. YoungAna experienced a tough time: she had to practice in a swimmingpool. A sports club official drained4 an Olympic-size swimmingpool in the winter and put down a green carpet and net. Ivanovicsaid practising there, with the pool walls just 18 inches from thesidelines, helped her produce consistent down-the,line shots.
A Turning Point
Fate was kind to Ana. The key moment in her life was whenshe met a Swiss businessman-Holzmann. He was told about Ana'spotential6. Suprisingly, it took him just two hours to decide to manageher after seeing her game. Within two years of her 2003 debut, Anahad paid back the seed money8 Holzmann invested in her.
Moreover, Holzmann wisely ended Ana's early relationship withNike, where Maria Sharapova9 is the queen. Ana now has a chance tobecome the Sharapova of Adidas.Follow the Dream
Ana is a humble girl with channing smiles. She's a nice girl,never saying anything that could hurt someone. But don't be fooledby her innocent manner. Her ambition is to become number one. Infact, she is doing well at the moment, capable of threatening the topwomen with her powful game.
However, frequent travels prevent her seeing her family much."That's what I miss the most, but I know that's the price I must pay tofollowing my dream of becoming number one."
What Makes Her So Strong?
"It is very difficult to find a reason for that," Ivanovic said. "It'sjust circumstances that all three of us came out at the same time. "Maybe one of the reasons was that when one started doing good, itmotivated the others to be even better. We kind of pulled each otheron the way up."
Ivanovic said she is coping with the fame that comes with movinginto the top 10.
"Women's tennis is mining to fashion and is involving celebrities,"Ivanovic said. "When people talk about my charm or looks it is veryflattering. Of course, every woman likes compliments, but I don'ttake them too seriously."
