The use of anthrax as a bioterrorism weapon after 9/11 has raised the spotlight on the other dangerous pathogen, variola virus, and the urgency of producing new smallpox vaccines and completing the mission of the smallpox research project. Over the past two years, research teams from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Defense (DOD), and international collaborators have taken on smallpox Virus related research work. The following is the group’s latest research in 2001.
