In 1980, there were 221 cases of collective food poisoning in England and Wales and 297 cases of domestic food poisoning. Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus were the pathogens causing poisoning. Of the 518 outbreaks, which recorded only 150 poisoned foods, almost all food poisoning caused by C. perfringens and S. aureus was caused by meat products rather than poultry. Of the 439 cases of Salmonella food poisoning (149 outbreaks and 290 domestic outbreaks), only 84 were recorded, of which 50 (60%) were caused by turkeys (30) and chicken (20). All Bacillus cereus poisoning are related to eating fried rice. In 1980, more than 75 people were reported to have contracted Scombrotoxin Poisoning.
