《彼岸》这个题目,既有死者到达“彼岸”之意,也有文化上、地理上的“彼岸”(中国)之意:“无根一代”对“彼岸”的渴求,不仅在何洛笛身上有体现,在年轻一代的尚晴乃至更年轻一代的楚眉身上都有流露。《彼岸》的主旨显然不是为自己的生活写自传,其重心放在了对美国华人这一文化群体的伦理与生活观念的挖掘上,尤其值得寻味的是小说中对洛笛——尚晴、尚晴——楚眉这两对母女关系的描写。
