【Abstract】As known to all, interest is the best teacher in study. If we want to be a successful English teacher,we should consciously foster the studens’interest in English, encourage them to keep in a good state, and make them willing to learn well. So we must have a new relationship between teachers and students,in which we can exchange our feelings better and foster the students’interest in English learning more successfully. In our teaching activities we must focus on studying the differences among different students and create a free and active atmosphere where we can stimulate the students’ interest and desire to learn more knowledge and skills. We must study the materials for us to teach the students with, prepare every teaching period well and add as much interest as possible to our teaching and we must have varieties of English over-class activities to create more opportunities for the students to experience their success so that students can keep interested in learning English.

一、Introduction
Interest can stimulate the students’enthusiasm and initiative to the highest level. An ancient Chinese educator named Confucious paid close attention to fostering the students’ interest in learning by pointing out ‘those who are eager to know something can learn more than those who need to ’ In the bilateral relationship in our teaching activeities , the guidance is importanat , but it is effective only because it can really make the students interested in learning the subject that is being taught and that the students like to learn a subject is based on a certain motivation ,namely ,the purpose of their learning something .Among the different factors that influence their learning ,interest is the most active one .Therefore ,how to foster a strong and perpetual interest in the students’ English learning is the most important thing for an English teacher. Here,I am going to discuss some points about how I foster the students’ interest in my English teaching .
二、The relationship between teachers and students
One of the most important aspects in basic education is to foster students’ motivation [emotion] as a goal when teaching them the subjects, and keep doing that in teaching practice .Teachers should pay attention to positive emotion fostering and improve our teaching by making full use of the positive effect of emotion. So it is necessary for us teachers to have a new relationship between teachers and students . 1.Cooperative relationship between teachers and students
Being cooperative means that teachers should respect the students instead of forcing the students to do what the teachers want them to do ,which can easily hurt the students’ confidence and self-esteen, or even make the students frightened and have an antipathy to the teachers. If this happens, the students’ interest in learning will be lessened Being cooperative means teachers and the students are equal in personality .What we did was to teach those who didn’t know how to learn to learn and force those who didn’t want to learn to do as the teachers wanted to ,but now what we are doing is to teach those who don’t know how to learn some effective ways in learning a certain subject and attract those who don’t want to learn to our subjects with our active and effective teaching skills .Attraction here means ‘getting the children to be willing to learn a subject and join in the teaching activities carried by both teachers and students.’
2.Harmonic relationship between teachers and students
Successful teaching depends on a sincere understanding and mutual belief between teachers and students as well as a harmonic teaching atmosphere. It is important to build teachers and students a harmonic relationship , which is a tie connecting the teachers and the learners and the essential factor in the relationship is to love the students. Balter once said that a teacher’s love to the students is like honey dews that can even awake the worst withered mind, and a teacher’s love is also like a breeze of spring wind that can melt the thickest ice encaging the emotion. As a teacher, when we begin to teach a new class, the fisrt thing for us to do is to establish a harmonic relationship between the teachers and the students . In our eyes the students’future is far more important than their past and we should also convince them. We teachers and students are friends in or out of class. By doing this we can eliminate the nervousness of some timid or different students. We believe that a harmonic relationship is a strong motivation for the students to join in any teaching and learning activities.
Education is a business full of emotion and love ,which not only influence the relationship between teaching and learning but also have something to do with how teachers and students exchange their ideas and emotions. The relationship between teachers and students has an effect on and control the emotion and will and influence the cognitional activities. ‘Love the teacher, love his way’is an old saying in China. So, if students like their teachers will show great interest in their learning.Teachers should convey their emotional information such as love, encouragement, belief and respect through their words and behavior so as to get rid of the students’fear of making mistakes in their talking in English, let the students keep a good frame of mind, protect the self-esteem of the students, which will be of great use in fostering and maintaining the students’interest in learning English . 三、Stimulating the students’ interest in English learning
Interest is the best teacher for the students and a strong force to foster and inspire the students’learning motivation and interest, reinforcing the consciousness of taking part in the learning activities; interest is also an amazing push to develop the students’ latent energy and let them make greater progress. When I taught Unit 7 in Book 3 for minor middle school students, I taught them the drill ‘what do you do ’ and then I gave them a topic ‘what do you want to be in the future ?’ and asked them to talk freely .To make the activity easier, I told them they could use Chinese words to replace those English words they needed but didn’t know how to say . In this way the students found they could do the job more easily and they showed greater interest in talking about the topic .
1.Paying attention to the difference among the students .
Different students have different backgrounds, different ways of thinking and learning and different starting points, which decide that the students have different levels in their knowledge and competence. When we teach a class ,we must know the real level of the whole class, but the most important is to know the individual levels of the students so that we can make a proper teaching plan to teach the students in different levels. To the students of lower levels we give some easy exercises to do and easy questions to answer, so that they can finish the tasks successfully and they will be encouraged by their success and achievements. If they find that they can also do something well in a subject their attention will be more easily drawn to it and the way they think over the problems related to the subject will be improved, which is an important step for them to learn more difficult knowledge and skills in the subject. To teach the students of different levels, encouragement is important, when I taught the drill ‘have been to ’I said‘I have been to Nanning’ and a student who was thought to be poor in English said,‘I have been to Guilin’and otherstudents followed him. I praissed him at once, ‘you are great’.The students in the class become more aactive and happier. To the students of higher levels, we require that they can both master the knowledge and skills and are able to use what they have learnt to solve different problems so that they can go from better to the best. So I give them more difficullt tasks, with more difficult knowledge and skills to learn and more exercises to do so that they can go further into the subject, touching more information and accumulating more experience, otherwise, some of them feel that they have been good enough and stop learning the subject. Sometimes, I will give them difficult related materials to read after I check that they learned a new lesson well. To the students who are temporarily poor in the subject English ,we must give them more opportunities to catch up with the other students, for example, we can slow down our teaching, spending more time helping them, so that they can be good enough to continue their learning. 2.Caring about and encouraging the students
Caring about the students can become a force for the students to learn well and encouraging them can make them more confident. So, being a teacher, we ought to take any chances possible to praise and encourage our students, especially those students who contemporarily have some difficulties in studying a certain subject, trying to find their advantages and tell them their latent ability so that they have more confidence. For example, when we ask some students to answer a question, if he or she cannot give a right answer, we should show our care and encouragement instead of saying something that will hurt his her feeling.Once,I asked a student to answer a question about the text, he said in a low voice:‘I can’t speak English .’I laughed sincerely and said to both him and the other students : ‘In fact, you are speaking English ,so well! Now,‘let’s clap.’And all the other students clapped to encourage him. When the classroom became quiet again, he, having been cheered up, answered the questions in fluent English. From then on,he dared to speak English in class, or other public places. Sometimes, I even think that we are not only fostering the students’ interest in a subject but also making a‘somebody’for the society.Caring about and encouraging the students can also help to conquer any difficulty in their way to their success.
3.Establishing the learning environment and desire to learn
The junior middle school students all have a strong desire to make great progress in their learning and they are also active and eager to express what they think and show what they can do. Sometimes, in the eyes of the adults, they may be violating some principles such as ‘Keep quiet in the classroom ’ or ‘Listen to the teacher carefully.’ But we must keep in mind that these are quite natural to children so we should not quench the students enthusiasm to make a ‘quiet classroom.’ Instead, we should use the children’s activeness and eagerness and the teachers’humorous, inspiring and attractive speech, rich gestures to create a class with a harmonic and pleasant atmosphere, which enables the students to study English and practice tha related skills heart and soul and speak English or think about something in English more bravely and freely, and at the same time, increase their confidence and interest to use the language. A proverb says ‘Well begun, half done.’ So, when a class begins we can make use of first five minutes to create a good atmosphere. For example, we can tell the students a simple English story, sing or listen to an English song or play some games such as solving an English riddle , guessing something related to the content to be taught. Once when I taught the topic ‘Food and Drink’ in book 1, I asked the students to stand up to have a look around the classroom and counted how many bottles or tins and plastic bags they could see. They all cheered up and stood up to do so. After that, I led them to make a list of names of the drinks and foods. They felt pleased to do so and our teaching could go on very smoothly. If the students can succeed in doing what they are doing, their interest and desire to do it will be doubled, so we say‘A success may bring another success.’ 四、Various teaching strategies in fostering students’ interest
1.Effectively using the textbooks and teaching methods in language teaching
When we use the textbooks or other teaching and learning materials, we can have a step-by-step process. We must begin a class or a topic with simple knowledge and then we can come to more difficult points and deal with them with the knowledge the students have mastered. Of course we must give the students opportunities to solve some more difficult problems so that they can experience their next success coming from their efforts, so that the students are always in an activated and dynamic state with a gradually growing interest.
When we lead the students to a new unit or a new topic, we must make the students realize that they will experience something new and they will have something new to explore. The students’ attention will be concentrated when they know that they will have a chance to face a new and interesting area and they will master something useful. Facts have proved that it is one of the key steps to make the students focus on what is to be learned in an English class. Here we are going to talk about how to lead the students to new topic or some new knowledge .
⑴Beginning the class with a story
Students are fond of listening to stories, both in Chinese and English that they can understand. They will be happy when they find that they can understand some English stories. When I teeach some texts containing some stories I will tell them in simple English with the help of gestures and pictures. When I taught the text ‘The Moon Light Sonata,’I told the students the story this way: ‘Long long ago, there was a girl . She was blind and her family was very poor. She liked music very much, expecially Beethoven’s music. ’ The classroom was very quiet since the students were all lost in the story. After the story, I played the recorder and let them enjoy the song ‘The Moon Sonata.’ Now ,the students followed the music in a very low but confident voice, which the students could do because they had understood the main idea of the text, which was the spirit of the music. By doing this, I introduced the main idea of the text and also let to a new text very naturally.
⑵Beginning the class with some interesting related questions
To use the skill effectively, we must make sure that our questions are interesting and relaed to the topic we will talk about. When I taught the lesson ‘What food do you eat in the Spring Festival?’ First, I showed the students a bag and aksed: ‘Can you guess what were in the bag.’ The students were eager to guess what were in the bag. After that, I asked them what were their favorite foods. They gave different but interesting answers. At last, I came to the question: ‘What is your favorite food in the Spring Festival?’ ‘Zongzi’ some students shouted at once. ‘You are great,’ said I , ‘You are all right. Congratulations.’ Then I let the students continue to practice talking in English about the common food we could see in our daily life and the students did that with spirit. ⑶Other methods to begin an English class
Sometimes I will try to make my first several sentences of my speech to the students very interesting, which is a good way to attract the students’ attention, but sometimes, if we make some mistakes in the beginning sentences at will, we can also draw the students’ attention, and the more the mistake is apparent, the more humorous and attractive the sentences will be. For example, when I taught ‘Make Our City More Beautiful’, I began the lesson with the sentence ‘now, boys and girls, I saw a litter girl put some letters in the little.’ I stressed the words ‘litter, letter and little’ and read them loudly, which made the students in the classroom laugh with joy. Humor sometimes means intelligence and cleverness, which can not only add to joy and a pleasant atmosphere, but also make the teacher himself or herself accepted by the students. If we can show our sense of humor properly, we can share the best teaching and learning effect with the students.
2.Having varieties of over-class activities
⑴Performign a short play related to the text
A famous educator of the former Soviet Union once pointed out: ‘The resource of interest lies in application.’ We teachers can organize different over-class activities for the students to use what they have learned so that they can improve their language skills and have more interest in English . We can let students of different levels take part in their proper activities in order that they can make the best use of their knowledge. Once, when I finished teaching the lesson ‘Edison’, I asked the students to rewrite and then perform a play in which a student acted a reporter and another student acted Edison’s father. They show great interest in doing that.
After doing this, the students know more about their own abilities and become more confident.
⑵‘Publishing’the students’ writings
We can also let the students have their own English newspaper, with a beautiful name, for example‘English Garden’, or wall newspaper,in which the students can show their own writings or some ways to solve some problems, for example, how to correct a mistake and how to express some ideas in English
⑶Organizing English groups
Organizing English group is also a good way to attract the students to further study their English. If we can organize different study group according to their levels, will be better for us to teach different students by giving them different learning materials, exercises and tests, and the students will be able to get from our teaching as much as possible. ⑷Holding different competitions
We can hold different contests for different students to show their different talents in English, I often hold the foolowing English competitions:
English reciting competition for those who are more active.
English word memorizing competition for those who have a good memory.
In the competition the students can not only learn much language skills but also realize that they have some special talents which may influence them for a long time or become a career that they will devote themselves to.
五、Increasing the students’ interest by making them successful and confident
Everybody wants to be successful and accepted by the society so that their talent and value are admitted by people. Every student in school wants to make a great progress in their study, by which they will be paid attention to by his teachers and respected by his classmates. If a student can experience his success in a subject, they will reinforce it to make it as well as he can. An English teacher can create different oppoortunties for different students to experience their success in English study. For example, an English teacher can give different questions to different students to answer so that they all can answer the questions correctly, by doing this the students will be able to experience their success and be encouraged. Correct evaluation of the students is also very important for a teacher to make a good relationship between him and the students and give the students confidence.
Encouraging the students in time
When the students make a progress, great or small, we should praise and encourage them in time sincerely so that they will have a stronger motivation in studying the subject. As we know, success, instead of setback, can give the students more courage to go forward into what they are doing, sometimes, further than we have expected. I always try to find a chance to praise and encourage my students when they try their best to answer an English question, correctly or not, I will praise them for their courage; when they work out a problem correctly, I will say OK to them; when they make an English dialogue, I will say I appreciate what they have done. I have a student who still find it difficult to learn English well and he got a poor mark in one of his English tests [only 14 points ]. He is active and like showing what he thinks he can in my class. I think and I tell him that he can learn english well because he is active and had a positive attitude towards difficulties he meets with. In my class, I often give him some simple questions to answer. He can often gives right answers and feels very satisfied with himself. When he makes some progress, I praise him and encourage him, which I think works more than what I expect, because other students are also encouraged .In the recent test, the student got a better mark [58 scores ] ,which was the last place in the class, but still made him very happy, saying to me:‘Ms Lin, I have never got such a good mark since I began learning English.Thank you very much.’In the test-evaluating class,I said:‘You have a good job. I think you will be better and better ’I mentioned him, who made a great progress, saying that he was a bright boy with an iron will and he would be able to catch up with others very soon.In the last examination for the minor middle school students of that student who was once very poor in English also passed the examination successfully, getting 98 scores. 六、 Conclusion
When we talk about success,we have to click the following words:interest, motivation, goal, encouragement, confidence and so on.When we want to lead our students to a great success,we do have to study the relationship between them but the most important to do is to learn to love,to love our work our students as well as the future of the students. When we are fostering the students’interest in learning a certain subject,we are doing more than that, because,in fact,we are fostering the sudents’confidence to their learning, facing the difficulties in their study as well as a positive attitude towards their lives, which is important for them to have a successful future and the students’successful future means also a successful society of ours.
In fact, interest, motivation, goal, encouragement, confidence and so on are of the same family, which double and depend on each others. If we can use them properly to help us in our teaching, we can not make our students good at using the English language to get new language and useful information,to communicate successfully with the foreigners and can also create a new generation, concerning about other people and our society as well as themselves and learning how to learn, how to survive, how to cooperate with others and how to develop themselves successfully.
