“掌篇小说”是1930年代《妇人画报》里的一种重要文学样式。它以短小精练的篇幅书写都市情爱故事,诉说着飘忽的思绪,在新潮词语、“混语书写”和轻柔叙述的语言模式及时尚女性插图的勾画中,建构出特有的“摩登”情味,可称之为“摩登主义”文学。“掌篇小说”的出现受日本新感觉派川端康成等人的影响,同时也是海派作家反叛普罗文学宏大叙事、提倡“轻文学”的结果。这些片段化、不完整的故事和意识流的叙事方式,不但再次推翻了以“情节”为中心的传统小说叙事的优先地位,而且以其洋溢的欧化语体为现代小说语言带来新的风格。
