Glaciological expedition to Mt. Tomur region in Tianshan Mountains in 1977—1978 supplied Plenty data for the study of the basic features of glaciers in that region, which are to be dealt with fully in this paper. As natural conditions are very favourable to glacier formation, numerous large mountain valley glaciers develop in this largest region in Tianshan Mountains. The results from our investigation clearly show that they are not in a state of declining, but have changed their waning and degraded outlook and become active developing ones. Formerly they were classified as Turkistan type of glacier mainly because they are declining now. We have given, however, a new name called Tomur type glaciers of subcoutinental features, mainly infiltration-congelation in ice formation with lower ice temperature, moderate or even slow movement velocity and rapid ablation.
