Zhejiang Library has a copy entitled “Proceedings of the Minutes”, the transcriber is a modern Shanghai bibliographer Han Ying-hui, transcripts finally Shanghai modern literati Yao Wanchu postscript. “Open Minutes” is very complicated, mainly in the mechanical production, metal processing, mining, mainly involved in agriculture, animal husbandry, fishing, paper making, chemical industry, porcelain firing, telescope production and so on. Various evidences show that this transcript is actually an uncollected note of Xu Guangqi, whose content can be broadly divided into two major parts. The first part is about some folk crafts of Chinese traditions and the second part is about the new scientific and technological knowledge from Europe, including the professional vocabulary transliterated directly from European writings. Some of these new scientific and technological knowledge from Europe are imported by Ricci, while others are from other missionaries. The main value of the opening minutes is that it not only helps to further explore Xu Guangqi’s scientific and technological achievements, but also provides valuable information for further studying the history of science and technology in ancient China, especially the spread of western scientific and technological knowledge in the late Ming Dynasty in China. In the meantime, this transcript also has some significance for the study of the useful books of the Han and Song Dynasties. In addition, with the help of “Opening a Minute,” some of the typographical errors in the current “Complete Works of Xu Guangqi” can be corrected.
