Australia produced 20.2 million tons of offshore crude oil in 1988 and natural gas output was 8.69 billion cubic meters, second only to India and Indonesia, ranking third in the Asia Pacific region. The Bass Strait is Australia’s main offshore oil producing region, accounting for 75% of the total oil production in Australia. In early 1986, the peak production of the Bast Strait had reached 500,000 barrels / day, to meet the entire Australian demand for oil 85%. However, production declined due to oil prices and taxes, and reserves also faced a declining trend. It is estimated that by the early 1990s, the production volume in the Bast Strait will drop to 370,000 barrels / day. In order to maintain the current level of self-sufficiency in crude oil, Australia must add 27.4 million tons of reserves each year.
