This article is the introductory part of the British sociologist Colin Campbell’s “Romantic Ethics and Modern Consumerism.” The title follows the Weber’s “Protestant ethic and capitalist spirit” from headline to research ideas. By combing and analyzing consumer revolution accompanying the British industrial revolution in the 18th century, this book explores the origin of modern consumerism and attempts to turn the literature romantic Connection between “acquisition and expenditure” of modern industrial society. Through the illustrations of literature, history, sociology and economics, Campbell proposed that the characteristics of modern social consumerism stem not only from the market forces of industrial capitalism but also from the romantic arts of acquiring pleasure and day dreaming. This book is a classic work of Western consumer culture research, but also a must-read book of consumer culture.
