参与南京大屠杀的侵华日军第十军下属的石田炮兵部队,在1937年11月18日攻克浙江省嘉兴县后树立了一块名为“石田炮兵部队奋战之地”的石碑,以“纪念”该部队不靠其他兵种配合而独立攻克国民政府防御工事的“战功”。建造“纪念碑”等精神武器是战时日本的国策,目的为动员日本民众参加对外侵略战争。石碑不仅是征服中国的殖民符号,而且是以东京靖国神社为中心、从日本国内到殖民地和占领地的祭祀战争亡灵体系的一环。2013年3月,该石碑在离原址不远处被发现。该地为民国时期嘉兴的交通咽喉,也是国民政府江浙国防工程中守卫嘉兴城的最后阵地,因此成为日军的“奋战”和立碑之地。碑文中的日军军官石田保道、桥本欣五郎、藤村谦等人与九一八事变、南京大屠杀、东京审判等中日两国近代史上的一些重大事件密切相关。
