At present, the brake disc materials used by Shinkansen EMUs are mainly Ni-Cr-Mo low-alloy cast iron. Recently, the development of high-strength materials such as cast iron ─ cast steel bilayer materials and high heat-resistant forged steel, and put into practical use. However, these steel materials do not effectively reduce the unsprung mass. In this way, began to pay attention to ceramic particles dispersed aluminum alloy composite material. This material is much lighter than steel and has good abrasion resistance under typical test conditions. This article explores the possibility of using lightweight brake discs of this material. The SiC (silicon carbide) particle-dispersed aluminum alloy brake disc has been mounted on an EMU and tested by two Japanese railways on the 100N Shinkansen EMU and the “Win350” test car.
