殷墟甲骨文记事刻辞中的“■”字前人未曾论述,本文结合新出花东甲骨材料对甲骨文中的■、■、■字用法作了一番考察,认为它们实为一字异体,应释为“肇”之初文,含义上有“致送”一类意思;并强调了金文中“肇”字所从的“■”并非是“启”字,“启”在殷商甲骨文及西周金文中都是从“又”的,讹变成从“支”应是西周以后的事。
