China’s traditional dairy farming industry, which focuses on manual labor, is small in scale and has low labor productivity. According to the statistics of the China Dairy Cow Association, household dairy cows accounted for 76.8% of the total number of dairy cows nationwide in 1996. The average raising scale of raising dairy cows is less than 7.4 heads, and the average annual milk production capacity of adult cows in the country is 3516 kg, which is equivalent to only two-thirds of the world average production (5,500 kg). Compared with developed countries, China’s level gap is even greater. The average milk production per adult cow is 7412 kg in the United States, 6471 kg in Denmark, and 6378 kg in the Netherlands. As a result, the price of dairy products in China is higher than the international trade price of the corresponding products.
