In an office in the Western Industrial Area of Berkeley, California, there are a lot of empty cardboard boxes stacked outside the glass walls. They are filled with “dust” and transported around the world. Of course, it is not ordinary dust that will be loaded into these boxes, but “smart dust”, another name for an inexpensive smart micro wireless sensor. These sensors can be linked to each other to form an independent network that can monitor almost all situations: local temperature, attendance, traffic flow, and even the extent of earthquake damage and the health status of seabird communities. It has been hailed as a technology that will change the way the world operates.
