Because ordinary oils and lubricants turn into glassy solids at this cryogenic temperature, special designs and specialized lubrication techniques are required. Bearing load bearing surface can be thin film transfer lubrication. Lubricant is supplied by the bearing cage. Such cages are usually made of a self-lubricating Teflon mixture. For end seals in cryogenic fluids, material compatibility and wear are important factors. Seal ring is usually made of graphite. Since liquid fluorine is a strong oxidant, graphite produces a strong reaction when it is run in liquid fluorine. When the leak is allowed, the seal is designed to separate the work surface and the wear on the friction surface can be minimized.
