Meiosis is a complex process that ensures a reduction in the number of chromosomes and genetic recombination through a series of visible cytological phenomena. So it may be controlled by several genes. Meiotic mutants are useful materials for studying how particular genes control meiosis. In order to elucidate the genetic mechanism of controlling meiosis in rice, the male sterile mutants were induced by N-nitroso-N-methylurea (MNU) and the meiotic mutants were screened out. Cytogenetic analyzes of cytoplasmic abnormalities and cell cycle abnormalities in mutant pollen mother cells (PMCs) were performed.
