We’ve all had the experience of running into an old friend—someone our own age—who looks 10 to 15 younger than he/she really is. While we admire our friend’s apparent lack of aging, we can’t help but think that he/she is “doing something”, like having a few “nips and tucks” to avoid outward signs of aging. In some cases, that may be true. Cosmetic surgery is a choice that many people choose to help them regain or maintain a youthful appearance. But what about those people who don’t visit a plastic surgeon? How is it that they can look 10 to 15 years younger than they really are?
The answer to that question can be found in some little-known natural “anti-aging” secrets used by many top models and actors. These people have found that certain factors, such as diet, weight, exercise, exposure to sunlight, stress, and bad habits can have an important effect on the aging process. The good news is that you too can use these secrets to wipe years off your appearance. These anti-aging secrets all involve common sense changes in lifestyle and habits. They’re safe, simple and inexpensive. Best of all, used properly, they can work for you and help you look years younger than your real age.
Here are 6 little-known “anti-aging secrets” that can help you look up to ten years younger.
1. Get plenty of vitamins A and C in your diet.
2. Exercise for total fitness.
3. Get out of the sun.
4. Kick the habit of smoking.
5. Say no to alcohol and drug abuse.
6. Relax.
1. The “anti-aging” secrets given in the passage benefit ____.
A. people who don’t visit a plastic surgeon
B. top models and actors
4. Why did the Prior stop complaining? ____.
A. He did not wish to be remembered like an evil traitor after he
died
B. He wanted to be painted as Judas who betrayed his master
C. He disliked to be painted in fashionable clothes
D. He was pleased to be a fashionable model

Although April did not bring us the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn’t generally experience the atmospheric(大气的) sound and lightning that can accompany those rains, it is still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.
The reason these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, did you know that the lightning we see flashing down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes trick us into thinking we see a downward motion when it’s actually the other way around. But then, if we believed only what we think and we see, we’d still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.
Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two clouds or between earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there’s enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on earth every second. Parents can use thunder and lightning to help their children learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of the lightning flashing reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval between the flash and the crash to learn how close they were to the actual spark.
1. According to the author, in the area of the Central Valley, ____.
A. rains usually come without thunder and lightning
B. it is usually dry in April
C. children pay no attention to natural phenomena
D. parents are not interested in thunder and lightning
2. We believe that lightning is a downward motion because ____.
A. we were taught so by our teachers from our childhood
B. we are deceived(欺骗) by our sense of vision
C. it is a common natural phenomenon
D. it is a truth proved by science
3. Which is TRUE about lightning according to the passage?____.
A. Only a small number of lightning strikes occur on earth
B. Lightning travels slower than thunder
C. Lightning flashes usually jump from one cloud to another
D. There are far more lightning strikes occurring on earth than we
can imagine
4. It can be concluded from the passage that ____.
A. we should not believe what we see or hear
B. things moving downward are more noticeable
C. people often have wrong concepts about ordinary phenomena
D. adults are not as good as children in observing natural phenomena.

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others, as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (扭曲) one. Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!
Differences between peoples do, of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed(显示). So to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animals from themselves.
1. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they
are ____.
A. distorted B. normal
C. similar to each other D. different from its own
2. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will
____.
A. find out what its people are like
B. argue in favor of this country and the language
C. know the country and its people better
D. like its inhabitants and their language
3. The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign country is often
____.
A. from second-hand information
B. gathered from other sources than (from) its inhabitants
C. gained from the arguments about the country
D. different from what one had before the travel
4. In this passage, the author wants to say differences between people
____.
A. will gradually disappear because of the ease of travel
B. do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alike
C. will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull place
D. will not exist as one hopes

Japanese doctors have used thin sheets of tissue from people’s cheeks to repair damaged corneas(角膜). A team from Osaka University transplanted thin layers of cheek cells on to the eyes of four patients with a rare and painful eye condition, reports BBC online. Patients whose vision had been cloudy could see well afterwards, and the “new corneas” remained clear more than a year after the operation.
Doctors can also take cells from a healthy eye and grow them in a dish to produce a new cornea, or they can transplant corneas from donors. But these techniques may not work when both eyes are too badly damaged by accident or disease.
The team hope their work may help solve the problem and lead to other types of grow-your-own tissue transplants. The cornea is the clear layer of cells on the surface of the eye. It can be damaged by trauma (外伤) or by a range of diseases.
The team worked with four patients who had a painful condition that causes cloudy corneas and dry eyes. Often the eye can regenerate(再生) cornea cells but none of the four patients had this ability. The researchers took a 3mm-wide square of tissue from inside the mouth (cheeks) and grew it into a thin layer in the lab. They used a special low-temperature technique to separate a very thin sheet off each batch. They then laid that onto the patient’s eye. The cell layers stuck onto the eye and developed into tissue that looked and acted like a healthy cornea.
However, long-term follow-up and experience with a large series of patients is needed to evaluate the benefits and risks of this method. Yet, “it does offer the potential of treating severe eye diseases that are resistant to standard approaches,” said the head of research, Kohji Nishida.
1. Now doctors can repair the damaged corneas with the following
methods EXCEPT ____.
A. by using mouth tissue
B. by taking cells from a healthy eye and growing them in a dish
C. by transplant corneas from another person
D. by using finger tissue
2. If both eyes are too badly damaged, we can treat them ____.
A. only by using mouth tissue
B. by taking cells from a healthy eye and growing them in a dish
C. by transplant healthy corneas from donors
D. by none of the mentioned method
3. We can infer from the passage ____.
A. the new technique can be widely used in the operations
B. the new technique needs to be further tested
C. the new technique has more benefits than risks
D. any new technique has risks
4. Which of the following is the best title? ____.
A. New Invention
B. A New Technique
C. Mouth Tissue Can Restore Your Vision
D. Transplanting Can Restore Your Vision
