Foreword General aviation pilots have a maximum allowable flight altitude of 12 500 ft under no-oxygen conditions. However, hypoxia occurs below 12 500 ft. Personal lifestyles, physical conditions and conditions can interact with hypoxia, thus affecting flight performance. This study evaluated the physiological and cognitive performance of smokers and nonsmokers during mild hypoxia. Methods Nine male smokers and nine non-smokers who passed the Class III flight test criteria were exposed to simulated sea level, 5 000 ft, 8 000 ft and 12 500 ft altitude for 2 h alone Attribute Work Routine (MATB) test. Results Four physiological indexes: Percutaneous oxygen pressure (P_TCO_2) and carbon dioxide partial pressure
