云南是西南地区少数民族最多的边疆省份,因此也拥有丰富复杂而多元的民族文化,民族多元是文艺多元的根本。但在云南地区,尤其特殊的是外来文化和本土文化杂糅所派生的新的文艺形式。由于自唐朝以来政府对边疆的政治经济建设,道路的完善、商业的流通和汉文化的兴起,以及历史上大量的屯兵、屯民、汉民侨民的杂居和聚居,形成云南民族的复杂性和地方文化的多元混合性。滇西皮影的多元性从人类学、社会学、音乐以及美术的多维角度,驿路、文化政策交流、宗教民俗信仰的杂糅,以及戏剧表演元素等多个部分体现出云南滇西皮影渊源复杂多元的文艺特征。
