Author’s note: The story “The Snapshot of a Dog” in English Through Reading, a textbook used in many Chinese graduate schools today, gives a very vivid description of a pet dog. After teaching my students this lesson, I ask them to actively do guided Chinese-English translation, using some of the words, phrases and new expressions in the text. I devised these exercises with the intention of writing another story about human beings. After repeated revisions, I have linked all the sentences together, ending up with a rewritten form as vivid as, but ten times more moving than, the original.
