清朝与日本于1871年签订《中日修好条规》。根据《条规》第四条规定,明治政府于1874年2月派柳原前光为公使前往北京。中国于1876年12月派翰林院侍讲何如璋为第一任驻日公使。以何公使为首的使团共有40人,副公使为张斯桂。参赞官黄遵宪,即是本文要着重介绍的人物。其他出使随员,基本上分为广东和浙江两系。如黄锡铨、范锡明、廖锡恩等为广东系,沈文荧、王治本、张鸿淇为浙江系,这些随员大都是出色的文人。他们与日本
