日本轨距为1,067mm的既有线从1968年开始,最高行车速度已达120km/h,最近有提高到130km/h的计划。此外,1957、1959、1960年在既有线上曾作过145km/h、163km/h、175km/h高速运行的实验,都取得了成功。要提高既有线速度,关键是提高通过曲线和通过道岔的速度,同时还需考虑和研究提高速度给轨道和旅客舒适度带来的影响。
