本书由北京外国语大学中国海外汉学研究中心和比利时鲁汶大学南怀仁研究中心合作推出。原著为入华耶稣会士南怀仁(Ferdinand Verbiest)于十七世纪下半叶以拉丁文写给欧洲同行的一部著作,曾在欧洲产生重要影响。该书介绍了在康熙时代欧洲科学艺术(天文学、数学、地理学、机械学、水利学、光学及音乐、美术等)在中国的遭遇及其应用的情况、南怀仁及其他在华耶稣会士的科学实践活动,记述了有关当时清廷钦天监机构设置、工作情况的很多史实,是研究清代科学史、宗教史和中西文化交流史的宝贵的第一手资料。本中译本系从著名南怀仁研究者高华士(No I Golvers)先生的英译注释本译出,是南怀仁的西文文献首次在中国翻译出版,具有很高的学术价值。
