罗纳德·赫伯恩的环境美学思想首先体现在他充分认识到传统美学理论对自然美的忽视,并从历史的维度梳理了当代美学中导致自然美被放逐的主要原因。其次,他通过对自然审美特质和如何实现整体性自然审美的考察,从美学内部革新的层面扭转了自德国古典哲学美学以来漠视自然美的局面,实现了自然作为审美对象的复归。第三,他提出了环境审美模式研究中存在的主要问题——作为主观的审美想象与作为客观的科学知识如何结合的问题,并且通过形而上学的想象模式提供了解决该问题的一种思路。赫伯恩提出的问题及其解决思路以其内在的理论魅力持续不断地推动环境美学学科向纵深发展。
