1902年2月,京师大学堂出现重大人事改组,以西学总教习丁韪良为首的洋教习被全部解聘。至此,西方传教士对京师大学堂的直接介预,或从京师同文馆起对中国最高官办教育机构的直接干预告终。而严复在这次人事变动中扮演了不为人所知的重要角色。严复的设计既有防止外人操控中国教育主权的考量,也有本人进退因素的考虑。
In February 1902, a major personnel reorganization took place in the Imperial University, and all foreign teachings headed by Ding Yingliang, the chief western education officer, were all dismissed. At this point, the direct intervention of Western missionaries in the Imperial College or the direct intervention by the same institution in Beijing from the highest official office in China ended. Yan Fu played an unknown role in this change of personnel. Yan Fu’s design not only has the consideration of preventing outsiders from manipulating China’s educational sovereignty, but also has his own considerations of advancing and retreating.
