In 1996 there was a series of horrifying rapes in the United States. In a few months, more than 20 women have been raped. An analysis of DNA evidence and crime patterns shows that all of these rapes are done by one person. However, the police encountered difficulties in detecting the incident and could not find any clues about the offender, as all victims were unable to clearly recall the criminal’s facial features. It is very common in psychology, it is a kind of self-protection. For the victims, the memories of the criminals’ facial features have been reflexively linked to the painful emotional conditions of rape. In order to avoid this unsustainable reappearance of emotions, the victim initiates its own defense mechanism to “seal” all memories of criminals.
