关于琉璃,据古代文献与实物对照,一般有三种解释:一是指某些天然的有光泽的宝石(如水晶石之类);二是指某种人造矿物质的有色半透明体物料(犹如今天的玻璃料器类);三是指附着于陶胎的面层彩釉。如今一般采用第三种说法。附着琉璃釉的陶瓦便谓之琉璃瓦。古代“琉璃”二字也写作流离、瑙璃、流璃……等等,据说是形容其耀眼生辉、流光陆离之意。关于第一种解释,有文献可循。《汉书·西域传上》:“罽宾国……出珠矶、珊瑚、虎魄、壁、流离。”注引孟康的说法“流离青色如玉。”
