The Institute of Engineering Mechanics of the State Seismological Bureau and the University of California (Davis) have conducted cooperative research on sand liquefaction since 1981. During this period, field tests were conducted in Tianjin city in 1981 and 1982, including standard penetration. Tests, static penetrating test and shear wave velocity measurements, as well as soil samples were taken. Physical and mechanical tests were performed in both laboratories. In 1984, a similar test was conducted in Yingkou city. Based on the test results obtained, the liquefaction discriminant for China’s building seismic design code based on the criterion of standard penetration test N was verified.
