More than 30 years have passed since Virginia Apgar developed a scoring system for assessing newborns. Its purpose is to encourage more rigorous observation and more scientific evaluation of the clinical status of newborns. It is hoped that this will prevent babies with severe asphyxiation from being misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated, leaving other healthier babies to receive unnecessary oxygenation and disposal. In addition, newborn scoring system is also considered to be conducive to the prediction of survival. Can the Apgar Grading Act still achieve its original purpose today? This major question can be answered in three ways: (1) a re-evaluation of the grading method; (2) an assessment of the information provided by the grading method; (3) a determination by Apgar’s scope Its practicality.
