Penjing takes advantage of plants to design a landscape. Two clay figurines set under the little potted pine may present “I asked the boy beneath the pine tree” scene as written in the poem by Jia Dao except that the artifice and human skills are traceable with ease. However, a pot of unpruned wenzhu (asparagus fern/setaceus in Latin) is able to make a different view, which no other plants have the power to exhibit.
With a shared Chinese character zhu (bamboo) in their name though, wenzhu and zhu are simply compared in the way they look, and the former, implanted by the Chinese character wen with the indication of “gentleness”, thus means “bamboo of gentleness”. Comparably, its Chinese name, making it easily imaged as a gentle scholar or a woman of classic beauty, has the feel of being poetic. Since it is named as wenzhu, it is of logic to compare it with zhu.
One stands himself by the bamboo, watching its leaves shade him against the sun or bamboo shadows sway dancingly, breezes gentle and rustlings in his ears. Gazing at wenzhu, one may also lapse into the reverie that he is lost in when leaning on the bamboo. If the potted wenzhu happens to be thick, one is able to experience what the poet Wang Wei writes as “Alone in a remote bamboo forest, I play tunes on the strings and chant along” and would like to linger in his retreat among bamboos. Wenzhu is the miniature of zhu so that one will love both if he loves either of them and that it’s hard for zhu lovers to disconnect them. Whether it is zhu or wenzhu, strength and softness coexist in one, or a general of martial power and a lady of intellect in one. Strength is embodied in their bone-like stalk ascending node by node while the beauty of softness suffuses the entire plant, slim of build, slender of leaves, lithe and graceful. Zhu leaves come in a usual blade from wide at one end to pointed at the other, the edges of which stream forth, veins on the leaves running straight to the tip. In contrast, wenzhu, slenderer than zhu, has leaves as fine as pine needles, trying to be tender but not to show a touch of change in contour or veins. Little wonder wenzhu is called Cloud Sheet Pine too. Pine-shaped leaves hold themselves out interlacing into patches of cloud, distinctly laid out. The bamboo, painted by Zheng Banqiao, vigorous of bamboo nodes, carefully painted of leaves, has a great variety of leaves—width from wide to narrow, shade ranging from rich to delicate. However, in face of wenzhu leaves, Zheng’s painting skills couldn’t work so well. Wenzhu grows as stretched as vines, like the long hair that a girl is combing, fluttering in the air, charm displayed to the greatest extent. Seen from above, it looks as if it were a beauty in gauze; seen from below, it looks like clouds sweeping by. From a changed aspect, you get a differed view it produces anew.
Compared to a noble and upright man, zhu is much loved by scholars and those of refined taste. As one of Su Dongpo’s poems goes, “One can’t live without bamboo” and “One is prone to be vulgar without bamboo”. Put on the desk, wenzhu helps fly one’s thought, rest and refine one’s soul, and make one immune to being tired from his work. Those who are not good at attending to plants may keep wenzhu in the simplest way, doing no pruning at all but some watering at times. Fine sprays that sometimes go withered and yellow have no bad smell and can spread forth proud. In the mixture of green and yellow, there turns up a picture of coloured trees in rows. Once it has a chance to sway, a miniature scene of “After the wind whistles in the pines, the ground gets covered in gold” may unfold. Perhaps Daiyu in A Dream of Red Mansions would have written a poem named Burying Leaves as a companion piece of Burying Flowers if she had seen it. Wenzhu is like both the bamboo and the pine, two of the three winter companions (namely pine, bamboo, and wintersweet). Isn’t it amazing?
Wenzhu is a microscope into one’s psychology and what it drives is your imagination. Out of other plants, no more than what they are can be seen, which reduces one to being least imaginative. Above all, I say: The little plant, a stretch of view / What to watch and pursue.
