Most personnel specializing in maintenance and reliability have been trained in short courses during their work. However, many believe that formal assessment of formality can further enhance those skills and knowledge that are of practical value to their jobs and their companies. Beginning in the mid-1980s, Monash University in Australia has offered graduate programs in maintenance management to engineers who can not attend school. Later, a reliability engineering course was opened and in 1998 the two courses merged into a master’s degree course. Hundreds of students from all over the world now graduate from this major. With the advances in web-based instructional enhancement, there has been a significant development of this program, with students enrolled in 2006 in 19 countries on five continents. The article describes the development and evolution of this course as well as some lessons learned, but also lists the graduates can get a number of benefits.
