In Brooks’ poetics, “Paradox ” is the essential characteristic and fundamental technique of poetic language. “Irony ” is a universal rhetorical and meaning mechanism of poetic language. The difference between the two lies in that connotation contains a paradoxical paradox and “irony ” only needs the pressure of context; on the philosophical level, “paradox ” tends to poetry Ontology, and “irony” tend to poetry methodology; on the structure of the problem, “paradox ” concerns the issue of “poetry truth”, and “irony ” is related to Poetry theme "problem. Brooks, though somewhat arbitrary in the use of terms, did not confuse the two concepts.
