Macroporous cryogels are a novel generation of chromatographic supports used in separation science. They are characterized by having a high porosity (up to 90%) and very high pore sizes (0.1 to 200 μm).Due to these porous properties, these materials have been extensively used in the capture of target molecules from complex mixtures such as crude cell homogenates and particulate systems. However, cryogels generally present a low specific surface area and consequently there are few reports in the use of these supports as stationary phases for the highly efficient separation of biomolecules by adsorption modes. Therefore, new approaches to increase the specific area of these polymers could broaden the application of them in separation science.
