Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis with secondary dentofacial deformities is a severely disfiguring condition and surgical treatment of this disease remains a great clinical challenge.Currently, various surgical techniques have been described in the literature. In most cases these techniques should be used in combination to achieve satisfactory outcomes. One of the difficulties for many clinicians is to determine the proper sequence of these procedures because no uniform treatment protocol has been established. The purpose of the present report is to describe a 2-stage treatment protocol, composing of TMJ reconstruction as the initial surgery, followed by orthodontic treatment, and correction of dentofacial deformities as the second surgery for the management ofTMJ ankylosis with secondary jaw deformities in adults.
