Trritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is highly prevalent andcan affect up to 20% of the population. It is a commongastrointestinal(GI)disorder associated with alterationsin motility, secretion and visceral sensation.A range ofclinical symptoms characterizing this disorder includesaltered stool frequency and form, abdominal pain andbloating. There are no specific biological, radiographic, endoscopic or physiological markers that have beenidentified in this disorder and, therefore, the diagnosis ofIBS is based solely on these clinical criteria. Moreover, the etiology of these disorders remains essentiallyunknown.Improved understanding of the enteric nervoussystem(ENS)and neuroenteric pathways such asserotonin(5-HT)involved in GI function may contributeto a description of the visceral sensations of IBS.
