尽管美国海军“奥斯汀”级两栖船坞运输舰“特伦顿”号(LPD14)要到2007年1月才正式退役,但它在几月之前就已经被印度海军招至麾下。目前印度海军派遣300人到美国东海岸的诺福克海军基地接受技术培训,并计划在2007年5月前把“特伦顿”号开回印度。“特伦顿”号两栖船坞运输舰的满载排水量接近1．7万吨,不仅是第—艘进入印度海军的美制战舰,也是目前仅次于“维拉特”号航母的第2号战舰,同时还是印度海军拥有的最大的两栖舰船。更引人关注的是,在“特伦顿”号两栖战舰成交之后,印度海军开出了一份更长的清单,希望采购更多的美制先进装备。
