Zhejiang Arts and Crafts in Nice, France
By Guo Yi
Zhejiang Arts and Crafts Show, which started on October 18, 2005 in Nice, France, caused a sensational stir in the Mediterranean city where masters such as Marc Chagall, Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso once lived. These famed artists admired the oriental art, which had somewhat oriented local residents in Nice to the arts and crafts from East China’s coastal Zhejiang province.
That partly explains why the provincial artists were so successful at the exhibition in Nice. But the more important factor in the success was attributed to the presence of crafts masters themselves. They were boxwood sculpture artists Huang Xiaoming and Gao Min, Qingtian stone sculpture artist Xu Yongli, Ou embroidery artist Wang Xiangxue, Fan artist Zhao Pingjia, paper-cutting artist Lu Faliang, and root sculptor Cai Haichu. These artists are either leading masters of a local art or descendents of masters of a local art, and all of them have won national awards.
The artists put on their individual shows at the exhibition staged in the CAP3000 shopping center, one of the busiest shopping areas in Nice with the largest exposure to foot traffic. The whole exhibition area was highlighted by Chinese man-made blue calico and red silk thread knots. Visitors were amazed when they saw how these artists created artistic miracles magically on the spot. They queued to buy masterpieces.
Nice is home to a lot of modern artists today. The city is dotted with various art museums and galleries. Artworks of impressionism and fauvism appeal especially to the local people. So when visitors saw the 40 paintings created by fishermen in Jiaxing and Zhoushan of Zhejiang, they were thrilled. The paintings depicted folk life and customs all in the background of water of lakes, streams and the sea. These paintings attracted the artists and local celebrities. “Incredible” was the word mostly exclaimed about the paintings created by amateur folk artists in Zhejiang.
The 100-lotus-leave dragon, a traditional image in Zhejiang, was another blockbuster during the exhibition. Visitors were filled with wonder at the image and dancing postures of the dragon. The dragon came out of lotus flowers and leaves when dancers maneuvered the paper creature. The dragon show was staged three times in Nice. The local residents learned through an interpreter that people in Zhejiang regarded the dragon born out of lotus flowers as their guardian of good weather and prosperity. At the end of the arts and crafts exhibition, the dragon was presented as a gift by the Zhejiang provincial government to Nice City.
