In recent decades, stroke death rates have declined in most Western European countries, but the opposite has been observed in Eastern European countries. Based on the WHO MONICA program’s original data on stroke registration in the Kaunas community in Lithuania, the author studied the death trends of cerebral infarction, intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage within 28 days from 35 to 64 years old in the area from 1986 to 1993. Results According to the registration data, a total of 741 patients died of stroke (including 456 males and 285 females). In fatal stroke, the rate of subarachnoid hemorrhage dropped from 18.8% in 1986 to 11.4% in 1993, while that of cerebral hemorrhage rose from 28.1% in 1986 to 43.9%. Cerebral infarction
