I have been engaged in art history study and research since the 1950s. Over the past 50 years, I have witnessed the stormy history of the theory and research of new Chinese art and have witnessed the collision, fusion and common ground while reserving differences between Chinese and Western art theories. Many years of teaching posts and participating academic activities have kept my horizon open and my thinking can not be slack off. The practice of painting helped my understanding and comprehension of the artistic conceptions of Chinese painting in particular. Now reviewing the path you walked, I naturally remembered the words of historian Croce “History is the self-understanding of the living soul ”. I switched from studying history and theory of literature to studying art history. From 1953 to 1954, I studied at the Chinese Department of Jiangsu Teachers College (former Soochow University, now Suzhou University). From 1955 to 1960, I was sent by the state to Leningrad, the Soviet Union (now St. Petersburg, Russia).
