The changes in the world situation in recent years are causing the adjustment of the U.S. trade pattern: its focus is shifting to the Pacific region and especially to Southeast Asia. This is the analysis recently made by JL L. Harvey, senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Canada is still the largest single trading nation in the United States, but its current position in the United States is not as solidly consolidated as it used to be; trade with the United States in Western Europe has also dropped in recent years: from 34% of U.S. foreign trade in 1970 to 1988 Year; while in Latin America the trade with the United States also dropped over the same period, Japan’s exports to the United States soared 16-fold. The U.S. exports to Japan only increased 10 times.
