The British scholar Paul Hope’s “Community Reconstruction in the Era of Individualism” is devoted to exploring how to safeguard and prosper local communities and their common life in this increasingly Western-oriented individual society. Its focus is on public spiritual and cultural construction, This constitutes the “other” perspective of Chinese studies. However, the process of individualization in China has its own unique historical development, such as the underdeveloped democratic culture and welfare system, the rise of “unethical individuals” and the state’s strong management and decisive stance. The individualized Chinese story shows that the rising Chinese individuals have undergone profound changes in their dual sense, that is, the vigorous development of individual autonomy and the revival of privately-owned families. Among these, the reconstruction of individuality and publicity should all become the meanings of the reconstruction of current social solidarity.
