Objective To understand the relationship between semen quality and serum heavy metal content in young Chinese men. Methods The study was conducted on 529 normal male volunteers who conducted premarital examinations at women’s health insurance clinics in Shanghai, Henan, Zhejiang, Shanxi, Qingdao, Hebei and Guizhou provinces from December 1998 to December 1999. Results There was a negative correlation between lead and cadmium and normal morphology spermatozoa after adjusting regional factors. However, the correlation between semen quality and serum heavy metals was not obvious. The results of canonical correlation analysis of two provinces (Henan and Guizhou) were significant, which showed that the content of cadmium had an adverse effect on the normal morphology of spermatozoa. The effect of manganese on sperm quality was not obvious. The relationship between sperm count and serum heavy metals was not obvious. Henan’s results also show that lead affects sperm survival and morphology. Conclusion In general, the typical correlation between semen quality and serum heavy metals is insignificant. However, Canonical correlation analysis in some areas found that serum lead and cadmium may have adverse effects on sperm quality.
