This paper analyzes on a historical plane the two major story lines of Frances Burney’s Evelina-the heroine’s double journey of seeking her father’s recognition and a proper marriage, and reveals the reciprocal relationship between the aristocracy and the middle class in the eighteenth century England. The author also explores the historical changes of the marriage institution, when a new marriage model, with its emphasis on conjugal relationship, gradually established itself, paralleling the process of strengthening moral voices and status of the middle class.
