Chang Xingang’s new fairy tale A Stubborn Horse was published by the Chunfeng Literature and Art Publishing House recently. As a contemporary well-known children’s writer in China, Chang Xingang has published many classic works in children’s literature circle. His works have made him once the owner of Zhuang Chongwen’s Literature Award, Soong Ching-ling’s Children Literature Award, Binxin’s Children Literature Award and National Excellent Children Literature Award. Also, many of his works have been translated into foreign languages and published overseas.
A Stubborn Horse is a new work of Chang Xingang in 2014. In the book, a boy surprisingly finds that he could understand the horse’s words and he possesses a special ability of knowing the horse’s language. Hence, he and the horse develop a real friendship. In their contact, Prairie Horse’s stubborn character makes the boy love and hate it, but its straightforwardness and frankness also teach the boy to be a broad-minded, kind and brave person. It also teaches the boy to know about himself and understand human nature. Meanwhile, the boy gradually understands Prairie Horse’s inner world and knows its secret. Gradually, the boy finds that though the horse is just an animal, it also has complex emotions like human beings. In order to make the horse live happily, the boy decides to help it to go back to the prairie is earnestly longed for. With the help of his classmates and teacher, the boy sends the horse away. At the end of the story, the boy has a reunion with Prairie Horse. When the horse kicks up its forehoofs and whinnies, he sees the exquisite compass he once tied to it and cries.
An extraordinary friendship between human and animal develops magically under the author’s narration. The author’s description of characters is vivid and expressive, making it a good read for children.
