The acupuncture and moxibustion science is a clinical specialty of prevention and treatment of disease by using acupuncture and moxibustion with the theories of Chinese medicine as the guidance， including main and collateral channels， acupoints， acupuncture and moxibustion therapy and clinical prevention and treatment of diseases. It is an important part of Chinese medicine. With a long history and long standing of acupuncture and moxibustion medicine， people have used stone needle and moxibustion to treat diseases in the Neolithic Age， thus gradually accumulating the practical experiences. In the era of The Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon of Medicine about over 2，000 years ago， the acupuncture and moxibustion techniques in China were been widely used and favored by the general working people due to its reliable curative effect， convenient learning and utilization and economical and safety nature.
The acupuncture and moxibustion science has a complete systematic theoretic system， rich practical and clinical experience and unique advantages in gynecology， pediatrics， oncology， cardiovasology， diabetes， dermatosis and other chronic and stubborn diseases as well as other diseases on which the western medicine has no or non-ideal effects and the area of health care， and also forms a lot of characteristic diagnosis and treatment method. The medical circles in China have conducted researches on many aspects of acupuncture and moxibustion and the researches on the fundamental theories and clinical application of acupuncture and moxibustion have developed rapidly under the care of the policy of the party on Chinese medicine since the establishment of new China， especially the clinical application of acupuncture anesthesia. In the recent 20 years， the academic achievements and development speed of acupuncture and moxibustion in China have exceeded that in any period in the history. The acupuncture and moxibustion researchers at home and abroad and the clinical medical staff in acupuncture and moxibustion are increasing. At present， the acupuncture and moxibustion has been widely used in over 100 countries and regions all over the world to treat diseases and for acupuncture and moxibustion， its indications are wider and wider， its therapeutic effects have been improved continuously and its academic exchanges are increasingly active， so the ancient Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion has become a part of the medicine all over the world. With the acupuncture and moxibustion going to the world， China issued the standard of acupoints in acupuncture and moxibustion science in 1991 and 2006 respectively， which plays a role in standardizing the academic exchange of acupuncture and moxibustion all over the world.
The research on the theories of acupuncture and moxibustion not only plays an important role in the medical care cause of China， but also makes contributions to relieving the physical pain of people all over the world.
Benefited from the researches of doctors in past dynasties， the medicine monographs in acupuncture and moxibustion have come out successively and the systematic exposition from the theories of main and collateral channels to differentiation of syndromes to get the point， acupuncture and moxibustion method， clinical treatment of acupuncture and moxibustion and other aspects makes the acupuncture and moxibustion science form a more complete medical system of acupuncture and moxibustion. In addition to the republishing of ancient medical books， many books and journals involving acupuncture and moxibustion science， differentiated curriculum by taking the acupuncture and moxibustion science as the core contents， including science of channels and collaterals， acupoint science， acupuncture and moxibustion science， science of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy， experimental acupuncture science， acupuncture and moxibustion recipe science， acupuncture anesthesia and acupuncture and moxibustion principle， and other books concerning acupuncture therapy， including auricular acupuncture， scalp acupuncture， eye acupuncture， face acupuncture， wrist-ankle acupuncture， mouth acupuncture， tongue acupuncture， abdominal acupuncture and superficial needling， are published successively. However， the objective needs for books concerning acupuncture and moxibustion are wide and the existing books concerning acupuncture and moxibustion cannot meet the needs of readers in terms of not only quantity， but also type and in particular， the works comprehensively reflecting the academic contents of acupuncture moxibustion are lack. There is no communication about the researches on the ancient and modern acupuncture and moxibustion recipe， contents of new acupuncture and moxibustion skill system and code standard solution. The proposal of Henan Science and Technology Press on compiling Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion is vigorously supported by Professor Zhu Jiang， the President of College of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Professor Yang Yongqing， the President of Graduate College of Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine. The researches and clinical practices of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine， Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine and Henan University of TCM have summarized great deal of valuable experience and collected the experience of treating diseases with many ancient and modern acupuncture therapy， moxibustion therapy and clinical acupuncture and moxibustion therapy， thus playing a certain role in standardizing the overall system of acupuncture and moxibustion system. With the theories of acupuncture and moxibustion science and close combination of clinical application， the book gives a full view of the acupuncture and moxibustion science in China to readers from the formation， development and spreading of acupuncture and moxibustion to the application of theoretical basis， main and collateral channels and acupoints and then to the therapeutic method of various common diseases. For the convenience of the learning and understanding of readers， in addition to simple and concise language， the compilers are required to integrate the tradition， but not obstinately follow tradition， pay more attention to the combination of a lot of precious cases and literatures and illustrate with about one thousand diagrams as well as the real picture of ancient bronze acupuncture figure. The famous experts and professors from three big universities of Chinese medicine to compile the book is a guarantee to the content and quality of the book and the situation that the state promotes the development of Chinese medicine， and the advanced scientific research achievements， technologies and the clinical application development achievements of acupuncture and moxibustion science become the basis to publish the book.
