Come and join our discussion.

  February Topic

Reporter: It’s anything but a normal day in class for California native Ken Schulz. He’s in Beijing studying Chinese. After losing his job in Silicon Valley, Ken looked to China for his new career.
Ken Schulz: I figured, well, uh, if you can’t beat them, join them. Ha…
Reporter: Now he is considering job 1)prospects in China and back home, and he wonders why more Americans aren’t following his path.
Ken Schulz: Americans really need to wake up and, and realize that Chinese is a valuable tool to learn.
Reporter: A valuable tool to gain entry into an economy that’s 2)rocketing forward. Ken’s teacher has seen big changes in the past few years. In the 1970s and 80s, only a few studied this language, he says; now there are students from all over the world.
Students from more than 160 countries have come to China to learn Chinese. But 3)comparatively, there aren’t a lot of Americans competing to study 4)Mandarin. China’s economy could soon be the second largest in the world. But most Americans still choose to study French or Spanish at school.
In fact, Americans make up less than 1% of all foreign students. Washington DC native Steven Daniels has been studying Chinese for years. He encourages others to give it a shot, arguing it’s not that difficult to learn.
Steven Daniels: 1.3 billion people can speak it, so it’s not, it’s not rocket science注. So it’s, it’s mostly a 5)mental block.
Reporter: A mental block that perhaps more need to
6)overcome, as it becomes more important for those who can say “hello” to learn to say “ni hao.”

Toby Ling: As China grows more powerful economically and in other ways, people all over the world are starting to learn Chinese so they can communicate better with us. As China grows rapidly, Chinese will soon become a global language. I am pretty sure about that.
I am pretty sure about that.(我对此非常肯定。) He is a pretty nice guy.(他是个很友善的小伙子。)
Lydia Hanson: As an American teacher, I want our students to be able to have an understanding about what is going on in China by learning Chinese, even if they don’t go to China. This will expand their
8)horizons. Actually businesses like banks and companies are shipping jobs overseas to China, so learning Chinese is going to become a real advantage in that. And Chinese is
  9)destined to become international.
词组be destined to意为“……
Peter Eastwood: There is already one fifth of the world’s population speaking Chinese and we can see overseas Chinese almost everywhere in the world, so it is reasonable to expect that Chinese will become a global language as China opens up to the world.
China opens up to the world.。

Alison Newton: Millions of Chinese are learning English, but only 25,000 Americans are learning Chinese. Apparently, everybody is going to speak English. I don’t see where we can use Chinese, even though China has become the 10)powerhouse in the world. I’ve read that a large number of Chinese people who speak Putonghua may also speak a regional or local dialect at home. If I had a choice, I would not pick Chinese as the next global language.
If I had…I would…
Jeff Qin: With all the young people in China studying English from the third grade, China in a few decades will become the country with the largest English-speaking population in the world. So how can Chinese become global when even the Chinese speak English?

Love’s
