The small country of West Germany, equivalent to one-fortieth of China’s area and a population of only 61 million, ranks fourth in the world in terms of gross social product. It is made up of ten federal states (cities), two of which are independent (Hamburg and Bremen). West Berlin is not subject to its own constitution. The federal parliaments (municipalities) can legislate on their own, so their educational systems are not the same. The following is only a general overview of what I learned during 1981-1982. School system at all levels 1. Kindergarten: 3-6 years old. At your own expense. Government-run cheaper, privately run more expensive.
