This is the first half of the paper. It reviews the early development and research of broadband dual-channel DF systems. First of all, in the system overview, the whole direction-finding system is introduced from the antenna and mode to the detector, and then the characteristics and design of 4-arm, 6-arm and 8-arm helical antenna are discussed in detail. Focus on the design of the most practical (n = 4) quad-arm helical antenna. Unobtrusive data such as the radiation resistance of helical antennas and the rotation angle of the reference plane of the dual-mode helical antenna were also introduced. Then introduce another helical antenna (classic hyperbolic helical antenna), for the first time it is used as a useful dual-mode radiator. Then, various methods of making and subtracting circuits and constructing and subtracting circuits are discussed in order to deal with the signals received by the multi-arm helical antenna.
