The United States has done a great deal of work in estimating uranium reserves. Government’s role in uranium feedstock has shifted from supporting military plans to providing usable fuel for commercial electricity production. A comprehensive evaluation system has been developed that government officials use to make estimates of reserves at different costs for each mineral area using standardized methodologies and guidelines. The Department of Energy Energy Information Administration (EIA) was appointed in 1983 to complete the project and report on its energy resources. As demand for uranium has increased, there has been less concern about the adequacy of resources. In this case, the staff involved are also correspondingly reduced. The EIA estimates the reserves through a two-part research project. The first is to use a questionnaire to understand the economic deduction of the economy from uranium mining companies based on their own economic indicators. The second is to revise the early government estimates of mineral reserves to calculate production. EIA has developed a new system with the help of consultants and the uranium industry. The purpose of this new system is to establish a systematic methodology for estimating each place of origin at different price points, based on strict compliance with EIA standards. The original data was collected from the industrial sector through a revised annual questionnaire. If the company’s estimate complies with EIA standards, it enters the EIA’s reserves database. Supplementary information that requires an explanation or clarification to be estimated is collected through detailed technical discussions with the company’s staff. EIA has the capability to conduct independent reserves estimates on the basis of the requested drilling data. The estimated uranium reserves for 1990 included the preliminary results obtained with this new methodology. The uranium industry provided good cooperation and support in this regard. A detailed evaluation of various mineral areas is still going on. The next step is to improve the estimation techniques and to analyze the yields that can be obtained from reserves of different prices.
